Denali Day Seventeen – 20th June

Day Seventeen – 20th June

Had breakfast with Mike. The weather forecast as usual turned out to be totally wrong and Andy has gone to the summit with Jo, Dan, Bill and Charlie. Tim is sick and Zoltan is also staying behind with guide Eric. The day is not windy at all. I feel even more annoyed now. Anyway, it’s a tough lesson learn’t. This means they should be down here tomorrow so we can do the death march all the way out back to base camp tomorrow night. We will travel through the night and reach base camp Thursday morning. Then we’ll dig up the 60 beers we buried there and drink as many as we can until the little single Otter plane arrives to take us back to Talkeetna.

It’s 7pm and we just got news they’d summited. I’m so happy for them but it’s still bittersweet for me. I’ll just be glad that they’re coming down tomorrow and we can head out of here. I can’t wait to get back to civilisation now. But I’m so pleased especially for Jo. She really deserved the success here. She’s an amazing climber and someone I hope to keep in contact with.
